the aid for un-assisted carers

The June Rose WinchJune Rose is a portable, manually operated winching device to assist the carer of an ill or disabled person to be slid and centralised into bed.

Devices for lifting ill or disabled people into bed are available to help carers to manage a person unable to get into bed by themselves. These devices rely on lifting all of the person's weight, similar to a crane, and are ideal for a totally incapacitated patient.

This requires a substantial structure to take the load. On many occasions the patient is not completely incapacitated, and can manipulate themselves to an extent in to bed, but is unable to support a significant portion of their own weight, or have their mobility impaired. This device enables a single person to help shift the weight of the patient from the edge of the bed where the patient can position themselves to the centre of the bed.

Once the patient is stable in the centre of the bed, the single carer can then swing the legs of the patient round to be inline with the bed. This requires only the weight of the legs to be supported during the manoeuvre.

The whole device is designed to be easily portable by one person and small enough to be able to store in a car, particularly for mobile care workers who visit patient in their own home, where help from another care worker may be limited.

The device consists of a towel sized piece of fabric for the patent to sit down on as they lower themselves on to the edge of the bed. This fabric material is towelling on the side that the patient sits on and high strength breathable nylon on the other side. This material “mat” can be left in place if required and unhooked from the rest of the device.

The material mat is connected to a high ratio hand operated winch via a high strength rope. Operation of the winch pulls the material mat and the patient sitting on the pad to the required position in bed controlled by the carer.

The winch is attached to an adjustable stand that will support its own weight and has a height adjustment so that the winch housing is at the same height as the bed frame. The bed frame then provides the reactive force as the patient is moved against the bed frame or base.

The adjustable stand of the device has a kick plate and foot stand that the operator places one foot on. This helps stabilise the device during the operation of the winch. The underside of the foot stand has a high friction material to help further resist any tendency of the stand to tip as the patient is being moved.

The whole device does not take the weight of the patient, only the lateral force needed to move them to the centre of the bed.

Once the device is under tension the operating handle is prevented from rapidly & uncontrollable unwinding if inadvertently let go, by a resistive friction device.
